Cafes in Hanoi might be diverse in number but not so much in interior design, as well as drink and food selections. However, those who manage to have their own self never fail to attract the crowd, like La Place for example. Different from all those famous cafes overcrowded by customers, La Place is a spanking spot with its steady reasonable flow of people in and out. The key in La Place popularity with people of all ages might lie in its interesting design which revolves around classic French decor and contemporary Vietnam War posters and photos. It also has an endearing balcony overlooking Nhà Thờ Street, and of course, the famous St.Joseph's Cathedral.
La Place sweeps me off my feet by its charming quietness in the hustle and bustle of cosmopolitan Hanoi. Although it situates in one of the busiest hang-out spots in Hanoi, it stays far enough from all these noises, and immerses itself in the melodious ringing bell sound from the St.Joseph's Cathedral. The menu is well-varied with not only local dishes but also international twists, and my friend and I choose something that could not be more Hanoian, Chả cá Lã Vọng (Hanoi Turmeric Fish) (95.000 dong) for today visit. Although the seasoning is not totally traditional, the effort to keep the plating classic and welcoming is something I love. However, it is the drink of Mango Mint Aloe Vera that makes me definitely want to come back here. The price of 55.000 dong is completely worth it for a glass of smoothie so vibrant of real fruit juice that I could feel bits of creamy mango, special taste of mint, random pieces of aloe vera, but very interesting, a touch of creamy and sour yogurt.
